Strengthening the obligation to declare cash when entering or leaving the EU

Since 3 June 2021, a new Regulation (EU) 2018/1672 is applicable. This means that from this date onwards, stricter requirements regarding the declaration apply when you travel to or from the EU with cash worth EUR 10,000 or more.

As regards unaccompanied cash worth EUR 10,000 or more entering or leaving the Union in postal packages, courier shipments, or containerised cargo, Customs authorities can now also request that a disclosure be submitted following an inspection.

From now on, the term “cash” will cover not only currency and bearer-negotiable instruments, but also certain types of gold and prepaid cards. However, no declaration/notification is yet required for prepaid cards.

You can consult below the declaration and disclosure form for cash entering or leaving the EU:

Visit "EU cash controls" for more information and the full list of products that will be considered as “cash” from June 3rd 2021.

You must submit the declaration to the Customs authorities of the Member State of first arrival in the EU or of the last place of departure from the EU for the cash you are carrying in your hand and/or hold baggage.
